Kyoorius Awards 2019: Dentsu Webchutney Edges Past Ogilvy, Leads Tally with 14 Blue & 1 Black Elephant

The Black Elephant is awarded to work that’s truly exemplary across all disciplines.

The 5th edition of the Kyoorius Creative Awards recognised and celebrated the very best of Indian advertising in Mumbai at DOME@NSCI on June 1st. With 2 Black Elephants and 106 Blue Elephants this year, the Kyoorius Creative Awards honoured and celebrated the most outstanding and innovative work in Indian advertising and marketing communications.

The Black Elephant is awarded to work that’s truly exemplary across all disciplines. This year, Wunderman Thompson India and Dentsu Webchutney won the elusive Black Elephant for the “Blink Test” and “Haggle Bot” projects respectively.

Webchutney emerged with the Black Elephant, and the highest tally of Elephants overall at Kyoorius 2019. A total of 106 Blue Elephants were awarded, with Ogilvy India 15 Blue Elephants for work spanning the 29 categories. Dentsu Webchutney won 14 blue elephants and a black elephant, whole DDB Mudra Group took home 12 blue elephants. Wunderman Thompson India won 11 blue elephants along with one black elephant, and Famous Innovations took home 11 blue elephants.

Ashish Bhasin, CEO Greater South, Dentsu Aegis Network and Chairman & CEO India, said, “Dentsu Webchutney has a world class body of work and this comes as no surprise to me. But what stands out for me is the fact that one digital agency from the Dentsu Aegis Network has been able to outshine and outperform the traditional creative agencies in India. This just goes on to show that those who don’t have digital as a part of their core thought process, are soon going to perish from the business. Dentsu Webchutney makes me very proud!”

“This is Webchutney’s 20th year. And through these years, the prouder we’ve felt, the humbler we’ve tried to act. In that spirit, we’re humbled beyond measure. To our talent, our clients and our partners: thank you for your trust in us, and more importantly, in each other. What made this year exceptional is that we had all our offices firing all cylinders. A Special shout-out to our teams and clients at Flipkart, Swiggy who chose to put significant time, effort and budgets into such global, first of its kind campaigns like Hagglebot and Voice of Hunger. Just goes to show what is possible with the right support and investment from clients,” says Sidharth Rao, CEO and co-founder, Dentsu Webchutney.

Kyoorius received over 2600 entries for the 2019 Kyoorius Creative Awards, out of which only 302 were In-Book winners. All In-Book winners take home Baby Elephants and are featured in the Kyoorius Awards Annual.

Our Take: With Dentsu Webchutney leading the metals tally, it shows that Indian digitally-led creative agency has come of age and can compete in the biggest of leagues, and it’s here to stay- and only get better. What it also ensures is that real, deep-pocket clients are willing to back cutting-edge digital creative work, giving it time, effort and most importantly: budgets. The fact that Dentsu Webchutney’s biggest winners: Flipkart’s Hagglebot and Swiggy’s Voice of Hunger, were real world campaigns that aimed at real marketing effectiveness and not just innovativeness proves this point.
